Project Description:
The North Willow Farms Neighborhood is a progressive, mature
community that was experiencing sewer backups. A preliminary
sanitary sewer evaluation indicated several key project goals:
- The replacement of approximately 900 lineal feet of 8" and
1,600 lineal feet of 10" vitrified clay pipe (VCP) sanitary
sewer.
- The replacement of 21 lateral reconnections.
- The replacement or rehabilitation of 11 manhole
structures.
During the planning phase of this project, residents of this area
revealed concerns about removal of large hardwood trees, fencing,
and mature landscaping in the existing utility easements.
Further field surveys revealed additional concerns related to
cable, electric and telephone lines located within the same utility
easement, as well as a large diameter storm sewer located directly
over portions of the existing sanitary sewers.
Based on these complex factors, pipe bursting was used to:
- Simultaneously remove the existing pipe and install new
sanitary sewer pipe and lateral connections.
- Reduce inflow and infiltration.
- Satisfy residents by limiting the removal of fences,
landscaping, and large trees.
- Avoid the need for additional easement and minimize the impact
on other utilities, which ultimately lowered the environmental
impact.
- Realize a substantial cost savings over a more traditional
open-cut construction method.
